#1 - Don't talk to him like he's one of your girlfriends. We talk in circles, change subjects frequently, have a tendency to gossip, and talk about our feelings a lot. Guys just don't do that.
#2 - Get to the point. And spell it out when you get there. We can usually read another woman's mind a little bit, and fill in the blanks for each other. We can pick up on subtlety and unspoken meanings. They usually can't.
#3 - Don't ask him to analyze his feelings, do a magazine quiz with you, or read relationship books. It probably won't work.
#4 - Be thankful if you have a guy who will listen when you're telling stories about shopping, your girlfriends' love lives, the plot of your current soap opera, or whatever other "girly" subject you want to talk about. But honestly, don't expect him to get excited about it, or to remember it the next day. He's being polite, but really he's probably somewhere else completely.
#5 - If it's really important, write it down.
#6 - Don't tell him something you want remembered if he's doing something else. Something else could be playing a video game, watching TV, reading, brushing his teeth... you get the idea. If it's important enough that you want him to remember it, make sure you have his complete attention.
#7 - Don't nag. Bite your tongue, scream into a pillow if you must, but don't nag. If you catch yourself nagging, STOP. I read a quote once that said "Nagging is like being nibbled to death by a duck." And Proverbs has a lot to say about nagging and contentious wives. Just don't do it. It doesn't work anyway.
#8 - Don't expect him to read your mind. If you need something, want something, or want him to know something, just say it. Don't expect him to know it or to figure it out and then get upset when he doesn't.
#9 - Definitely don't nag, belittle, criticize or make fun of him in public. Think about how that would make you feel. You might think it's just a sassy remark, but he does have feelings too.
#10 - When all else fails, think about how you would like to be treated, spoken to and cared for - and then do it for him. :-) |
