The Importance of the Putter

Having the correct equipment is essential to a good golf game. A golfer with the correct equipment could easily at least 2 strokes on their game. When a new golfer purchases their equipment there is a tendency to just buy the most expensive equipment because they think it must be the best. This is not always the case. A golfer needs to find the equipment that is right for him/her self. Here are some things to look for.

A putter is very underestimated by the new golfer. Most new golfers are concerned with how far they can hit the ball. Well golf is a game that is won or lost with putting. You can make it on in two, but if you can't get the ball in the hole, you're in big trouble.

You will need to get some assistance when choosing your golfing equipment for the first time. Lets look at the putter. Some important features to look at are the putter weight, how long is it, the size and shape of the head, the lie angle and the grip type. Most importantly you will want to find a putter that feels good.

The average putter is 35 inches in length. The way you address the ball will determine the proper length that you will need. For example if you like to stand straight and tall you will need a longer putter and if you bend more you will need a shorter one. They even make a very long putter, it's around 45 inches long. This option may be a good choice if you are trying to change your stance to a more upright one.

You will want to handle as many different putters as you can to determine which has the right weight for you. The weight of a putter is very important. A putter that is on the heavy side will give you a great game on the slower greens. For the faster greens a light putter is the choice you should go with.

The way a putter sits in relation to the ground is called the lie angle. There are many putters with many different lie angles. You will want to pick one that allows the head of the club to be even with the ground when you take your stance. If the angle is too high the ball will go to the left or right.

When you are ready to make you putter purchase, you should bring along someone who knows the game of golf. You will see putters ranging from $20 all the way up $200. Why such a difference you may ask. A lot of the time you are paying for the name on the club. If it's a putter that is used by many of the pros, expect to pay more. Keep in mind that if a lot of the pros are using the putter it is most likely of very good quality and made of top of the line materials.
